This page provides information on the V-Ray Strand Sampler Texture.
Overview #
Strand Sampler texture allows more advanced shading of V-Ray Fur. It allows the mapping and gradation (or ramping) of color or texture along the length of each fur strand, as well as randomizing colors on a per-strand basis to create complex and custom fur looks.

Parameters #
Output – Specifies how the two colors are blended.
Position Along Strand – Blends between Color A and Color B based on the relative position of the shaded point along a hair strand. The Color A parameter is used at the root of the strands, and the Color B parameter is used at the tip.
Random By Index – Blends between Color A and Color B randomly based on the index of each strand.
Position Along Strand (Absolute) – Blends between Color A and Color B based on the absolute distance of the shaded point along a hair strand. This option uses the Distance parameter instead of hair tip to pin the Color B position. When the Distance is lower than the actual hair length, the gradient is repeated over the length of the hair strand.
Position Across Strand – Blends between Color A and Color B based on the relative position of the shaded point across a hair strand.
Color A – Determines the first color of the gradient.
Color B – Determines the second color of the gradient.
Bias – Moves the gradient midpoint and changes the interpolation between colors A and B.
Seed – Changes the random seed when the Random By Index output is selected.
Distance – Determines absolute length of the gradient when the Position Along Strand (Absolute) output is selected.

Example: Gradient Texture Remapping #
In this example, a Gradient texture with a Texture Remapping Placement Type is used to colorize the Fur. The Strand Sampler texture is set as a U map.
